BC coast about to become the “smartest” on the planet

Science

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is partnering with Western Economic Diversification Canada and IBM on a three-year multimillion dollar project known as Smart Oceans BC, which will develop and install a series of small-scale underwater observatories and high-frequency radar along the BC coast to monitor ocean conditions, help predict tsunamis and earthquakes, and provide science-based information for response to offshore accidents and natural disasters. ONC is a University of Victoria initiative that operates the world’s most advanced cabled subsea observatories—VENUS and NEPTUNE—for the advancement of science and the benefit of Canada.
