UVic well-represented in Victoria honorary citizen awards

Of 12 people recognized on May 29 with City of Victoria Honorary Citizen awards, five have strong connections to UVic. Congratulations to Murray and Lynda Farmer; Kathy and Ken Shields; and Dr. Verena Tunnicliffe.

Murray Farmer has had a long career in the local construction industry, and has been UVic’s chancellor since 2009.  His wife, Lynda, has worked in the non-profit and healthcare sectors.  Both individually and collectively, the Farmers have contributed countless hours of volunteer time to many Victoria organizations.

Among their many accolades, Kathy and Ken Shields are two of UVic’s athletics legends, having both had long careers as coaches of our women’s and men’s (respectively) champion basketball teams.

Verena Tunnicliffe is a marine biologist at UVic who works in the fields of biodiversity, marine exploration and conservation. She combines a drive for ocean exploration with a passion to understand the connectivity of marine environments.

The awards are presented every three years by Victoria City Council to celebrate individuals how have made significant contributions to the city through service to the community or personal achievements.
