UVic tops Maclean's rankings

The University of Victoria is the top comprehensive university in Canada in the 2014 university rankings by Maclean’s magazine, a return to the position it has held several times since the annual rankings began.

“We are pleased to be recognized as the country’s top comprehensive university which reflects the talent, hard work and commitment of faculty, staff and students,” says UVic President Jamie Cassels, QC. “The attention paid to post-secondary education by a national magazine serves as a reminder of the integral role universities play in people’s lives and in our society.”

UVic edged out Simon Fraser University to place first among Canada’s 15 comprehensive universities that have significant research activity and a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. In recent years, UVic and SFU have moved back and forth between the top two positions in the tightly clustered category.

BC universities overall had a strong showing with the University of BC remaining in second position behind McGill University among universities in the medical/doctoral category, while the University of Northern BC tied for third among the primarily undergraduate universities.

UVic consistently scores well across the performance indicators and was ranked particularly highly in the categories of faculty awards, scholarships and bursaries for students, federal grants for social sciences, humanities and medical/science, and library support, acquisitions and holdings.
