New UVic Courses For Lifelong Learners Start With Ideas

Continuing Studies

The cover of the University of Victoria’s new Continuing Studies Spring Calendar shows a smart phone that doesn’t seem too smart. Duct tape on an old- rotary-dial phone is what the first concept of a mobile phone might have looked like if theory and practice had never connected. It is one of the images in a deliberately tongue-in-cheek promotional campaign challenging lifelong learners to get the most out of ideas and interests.

Continuing Studies at UVic provides many new and inspiring ways to turn ideas into action. The new Spring 2013 calendar is packed with more than 200 courses for people who want to actively shape their experiences. The eclectic mix of adult education courses covers a wide range of topics such as the arts, business, health, history, languages, science, sustainability, travel and more.

New courses start now through May, including:

iPhoneography: From Techno-gimmick to Pocket Photography Revolution, with visual artist and photographer Claudia Lorenz (about making best use of iPhone cameras);
Strengthening Your Inner Activist, with instructors Ian Curtin and Jackie Larkin (about the interplay between the challenges of a world in crisis and individual experience);
Science vs. Religion, with local archaeologist and anthropologist Chris Mundigler (about the long-time debate on evolution versus creation);
The Tantric Revolution: A New Vision of What’s Possible, with Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Zopa (on Tantric teachings).

The calendar is accessible online with convenient one-click registration features. Printed copies are also available at various locations in the Victoria area including regional public libraries and recreation centres.
