UVic students are currently visiting historic sites in Europe in a field school examining migration, the refugee crisis and memorialization of the Holocaust. And the learning doesn't stop in Europe: they'll be at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in mid August, then home to UVic for a symposium.
From Borneo textiles to the world’s largest button blanket, from a 15th-century alabaster religious carving to a 19th-century lady’s pocket revolver, from anarchist manifestos to a Jim Carrey movie, the objects studied by art historians continue to change with the times. So too does the study of art history itself, as evidenced by the current Legacy Maltwood exhibit Learning Through Looking, celebrating the 50th anniversary of UVic’s Department of Art History and Visual Studies.
A new documentary, The Thinking Garden, about a unique farming collective in a small South African village carries lessons of hope and resilience. It was written and produced by UVic scholars Christine Welsh and Elizabeth Vibert and it officially launches on March 1.

The UVic database of Chinese Canadian Artifacts officially launches July 7 at the evening reception of an annual international conference, ISSCO 2016 in Richmond, BC, bringing together 300 scholars and researchers of the Chinese diaspora.
