Prestigious awards put refugee mental health in spotlight

A recognized leader in immigrant and refugee mental health promotion, Nancy Clark has made the wellbeing and integration of newcomers to Canada her top research priority. Over the next five years, her work will focus on addressing health and healthcare service gaps for people who experience forced migration and who arrive in Canada under various protection streams.

Awwad and Warburton are latest Schulich Leader scholars at UVic

Two passionate BC students—one focused on space, the other on cyberspace—who are planning to pursue an education in the sciences at the University of Victoria are among the 100 elite scholars from across Canada recently named Schulich Leaders. Mohammad Awwad was named the 2023 Schulich Leader Scholar in Engineering and will be entering UVic from North Surrey Secondary School while Evan Warburton, a recent graduate of Oak Bay Secondary School, is the 2022 Schulich Leader Scholar in Science. Awwad and Warburton have demonstrated a deep interest in and dedication to technology and astronomy respectively, and both worked to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with peers.

UVic-led project offers steps to repair Canada’s failing alcohol policy

News of alcohol’s harms and costs has dominated headlines post-COVID. The Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE) Project, led by UVic’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR), brought together researchers from institutions across Canada to evaluate alcohol control policies federally and in all 13 provinces and territories. Today, they release their results alongside evidence-based solutions to improve health and well-being.
