Singing to fight the stigma and social isolation of dementia

"Voices in Motion" is an intergenerational community choir for persons with dementia, their family caregivers and high school students. It's also a UVic research study looking into how participation in an intergenerational choir might foster social engagement and caregiver well-being, improve quality of life for persons with dementia, and reduce some of the stigma surrounding memory loss.

Globetrotting grad sets her sights on social entrepreneurship

Ariel Mishkin entered Gustavson five years ago with the conviction that her place was in the international community, despite previously having limited opportunity to travel. Since then, she's worked in Mongolia, Poland and India, studied at Poland's Kozminski University, travelled the Trans-Siberian Railroad, tried her hand at Mongolian throat singing, pursued her love of photography, won five scholarship awards, and kept up an A average while doing it.

Social app helps children on the autism spectrum

February 23, 2016 - The Ring

The newly released Let’s Face It 2.0, a scrapbook app developed by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Autism Research Technology Education (CARTE) and now available free on iTunes, is a powerful educational tool for learning faces and recognizing emotions of the important people in the lives of children on the autism spectrum. “It is a selfie culture and I hope our app will be adopted by anyone who finds it useful,” says CARTE director and UVic psychology professor Jim Tanaka. “Parents and educators can create their own storybook from people and objects in their children’s lives.”

More than just a smile: community dental clinics lead to recognition for social work professor

Social work professor Bruce Wallace, with the UVic Faculty of Human and Social Development, is the recent recipient of a BC Dental Association award of merit. Also a researcher and advocate, Wallace has invested the lion’s share of his academic career to improving access to dental care for those with low or no incomes.

Child and Youth Care professor Jin-Sun Yoon wins prestigious national teaching award. “I’m an accidental academic; I never planned to be here,” says Jin-Sun Yoon, teaching professor with the University of Victoria’s School of Child and Youth Care (CYC). Yoon's path to professorship has been paved with the same whole-person commitment that has led her to become recognized for her transformative teaching career—selected as one of 10 university educators across Canada to receive this year’s prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship.
