Fears that “vaping” is a gateway to tobacco smoking are unfounded, shows a comprehensive review of available evidence on the harms and benefits of electronic or e-cigarettes and vapour devices, released today by UVic's Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC) in a report called “Clearing the Air.”

Victoria city council has selected Environmental Law Centre legal director Calvin Sandborn (law) and Bernie Pauly (nursing, psychology) as two of the city's 14 honourary citizens for 2011. The award was presented on Jan.19 by Mayor Dean Fortin, in recognition of Sandborn's contributions to environmental protection and sustainability education on Vancouver Island and Pauly's community work on social issues, including homelessness.

Improving dementia care, stroke recovery and cancer support services are among the goals of eight newly funded projects involving University of Victoria health researchers. Each of the projects is receiving $15,000 from Island Health through its new Collaborative Research Grant Competition, which aims to strengthen ties between the health agency (formerly known as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, or VIHA) and its academic partners.

Life inside a hospital can be stressful, but nursing school graduate Kara Sundberg has found the perfect way to use the nurturing skills needed as a nurse outside the hospital to help her relax. “I focus my free time on working with animals and I have been fostering dogs in my area for years,” says Sundberg. “This has turned out to be a wonderful stress reliever after a long, chaotic shift on a busy medical unit.”
