Emily Haigh: Bridging Indigenous knowledge with mainstream psychology

A huge, historic charitable gift made national news in October 2024 when Bruce McKean and his Waverley House Foundation donated more than $200 million to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) for a secure care and recovery building in Toronto. But a smaller gift the University of Victoria political science alumnus made to UVic has had an outsized impact.

Study shows benefit of integrating police officers into community mental health teams

An independent study (2008–2019) shows that integrating police officers into Victoria's Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams reduces violence risks while enhancing mental health support without criminalizing mental illness. VicPD officers collaborate with health professionals to help clients stabilize in the community, reducing their involvement with the justice system. The report highlights improved safety for clients and staff, especially among racialized clients, and emphasizes that police focus on mental health, not criminality. Driving sustainability forward

Akash Mohanty is one of a dozen students driving sustainability forward on Vancouver Island through the University of Victoria’s Sustainability Scholars program, a unique graduate program that offers students paid internships to work on applied sustainability research projects with local community, industry, government, Indigenous and non-profit organizations.
