President's Walk for United Way
- Melanie Groves
A special noon-hour walk with University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels in support of United Way will take place Wednesday, Nov. 20. People of all fitness levels are invited to participate for a mid-day break.
“UVic is a strong supporter of the United Way, an organization whose work is so valuable to the health and well-being of the people of Victoria,” says President Cassels. “Our UVic campaign relies on the generosity of UVic faculty, staff and students, and I am very proud of our tradition of giving. Working together we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people in our city, providing not only skills and resources but also hope for a better future.”
The walk starts at 12 p.m. from the Student Affairs Plaza, located between McKinnon Gym and the UVic Bookstore/Campus Services building. The route will follow 2.3–kilometer Ring Road.
Last year, the UVic community raised more than $250,000 for United Way, from individual pledges and on-campus fundraising events. The 2013 UVic campaign has brought in nearly $160,000 to date, with the goal of helping United Way reach their target of $6 million. Information about the campaign is available at www.uvic.ca/unitedway.
United Way Greater Victoria is focusing on three impact areas this year: supporting kids and youth with resources to grow up healthy; building individuals’ financial stability and independence as pathways out of poverty; and developing people’s capacity to care for themselves and their families.
The Nov. 20 president’s walk follows a series of runs initiated by President Cassels in September, encouraging everyone on campus to enjoy an active, healthy living style.
