Recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day
On Saturday, Jan. 27 the University of Victoria recognizes International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a time to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. Each year, people all over the world take this opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the dangers of antisemitism.
The Holocaust was born out of hatred, intolerance and antisemitism. It’s important to reflect on this history, particularly as we are seeing rising rates of antisemitism on campus, and in our communities.

Standing against antisemitism
In 2021, more than 80 staff and faculty members in UVic’s Faculty of Humanities have pledged to stand against antisemitism—noting its sharp rise on campus and around the globe—with a list of nine actions to undertake together.

Holocaust education
In partnership with UVic’s Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, UVic Libraries has launched a digital exhibit, Stories of the Holocaust: Local Memory and Transmission, featuring 10 stories told by local community members whose families were devastated by the Holocaust.
