Revolving Sustainability Fund reduces campus energy and water use

Got a great idea to save energy? UVic’s Revolving Sustainability Fund provides funding to campus initiatives that reduce energy or water use with quantifiable cost savings and a payback period of no more than five years.

The fund finances special projects that might not otherwise be funded through the general budget to improve the environmental sustainability of campus and reduce utility and carbon offset expenses. Since its inception in late 2011, five projects have been approved for funding.

In 2012, University Systems received funding for a firmware upgrade to the UPS systems in the Enterprise Data Centre server building. This initiative will dramatically reduce electricity consumption, energy costs and the environmental impact of the building without compromising load protection. The total project costs are estimated to be $25,000 and will save approximately 58 kW per year, with a payback period of just over six months.

Staff, faculty and students are encouraged to submit their project ideas by the next application deadline of April 5. Contact action@uvic.ca and see www.uvic.ca/sustainability for more information.
