Breaking Down Barriers In Science: UVic Science Venture Program Wins Award
The 2009 Actua & GE Canada Award for Leadership and Innovation was granted this month to the UVic Science Venture program. The award recognized Science Venture for its innovative programs especially for girls and Aboriginal youth. The number of youth in all-girl programs grew by 112 per cent in 2009.
Science Venture programs include hands-on workshops, summer camps, school workshops and community events for youth from five to 18 years of age. At the heart of the program is a passion for bringing science and learning to all children and youth regardless of their socio-economic background.
Selected by a panel of judges from GE Canada, the Science Venture team and its director, Melisa Yestrau, had an outstanding year achieving the highest levels of excellence in curriculum, outreach initiatives and community partnerships.
