UVic retains top 200 world listing

The University of Victoria is once again listed in the elite 200 in the Times Higher Education’s 2011 World University Rankings at number 177 in the world, putting it in eighth place among all universities in Canada.

Being in the top 200 universities in the world “represents approximately the top one per cent of higher education institutions worldwide, so a place within it is an outstanding achievement,” says Phil Baty, editor of the THE World University Rankings 2011-12. “I would like to offer my personal congratulations to UVic on an exceptional result.”

UVic was the top-ranked university in Canada without a medical school. There are only nine Canadian universities in the top 200.

“With this result UVic has consolidated its place among the world's great universities,” says UVic President David Turpin. “This result reflects the hard work by our faculty, students and staff in the classrooms, labs and throughout the university in the pursuit of excellence in education and research.”

The global ranking is the only system that includes a section dedicated to the teaching and learning environment, including the first global survey of institutions’ teaching reputation.
