UVic's Science Venture Wins Award

The province's Information, Science and Technology Agency is giving UVic's Science Venture program a Partners in Science Awareness award. The $15,000 prize will assist Science Venture in operating, a non-profit, student-run summer science and engineering camp for elementary school children which stimulates the love of science through hands-on activities. Currently, students from UVic's faculties of Engineering and Science are traveling around the province giving elementary school children a chance to learn about science by doing hands-on projects such as building and launching a hot air balloon, participating in an oil spill cleanup, and constructing a natural water filter. "It's truly inspiring to create excitement about science for an entire classroom," says Science Venture member Cynthia Hopland. "The kids get pumped about the subjects we present to them and their teachers can't wait to have us back again next year." Science Venture is bringing "in-class" workshops to Prince George, Golden, Revelstoke, Sechelt, Courtenay, Chemanius, Cowichan Bay and Victoria.
