Dynamic learning
Grad finds her niche in informatics
Michelle Wright's decision to enrol in Health Information Science (HINF) was influenced by three key factors: word-of-mouth, the internet and personal satisfaction.
EU field school
Students from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts and law—now back in Victoria after a transformative trip overseas and also in Winnipeg—came together for a powerful and challenging field school that brought them to historic sites in Europe and taught them valuable lessons about Canada.
Nepali student inspires us all to widen our world view
A Canadian volunteer leading an aid project and boarding school in Kathmandu for Himalayan children helped transport Dechen Dolma Lama from one of the most impoverished villages in Nepal to UVic where she graduates this month with a bachelor's degree in child and youth care.
New Indigenous program is a first for Canada
A UVic program in Indigenous nationhood that is the first of its kind in Canada will train the next generation of leaders, scholars and researchers in how law, politics and governance intersect at a critical time for Indigenous relations in Canada.
Bridging legacies and supports
When her job as a Youth Care Worker with the Cariboo-Chilcotin school district was cut last June, Mikara Pettman, 42, was worried. A happy, productive woman—an equal family partner, mother to two teens and active in her community—suddenl…
75,000 co-op placements
Forty years after launching one of Canada’s largest co-operative education programs, the University of Victoria is celebrating its 75,000th co-op placement.
First Indigenous co-op exchange
When UVic student Kimberly Hanton packed her bags for her work term in Australia last month, she carried words of encouragement from the local Indigenous Elders. Hanton recently embarked on the university’s first Indigenous co-op exchange after attending a departure ceremony at First Peoples House in her honour. This unique co-op exchange saw Hanton travel to the University of Newcastle in Australia in August, while UVic will welcome Australian Indigenous student Cristal Walters to campus this fall.
New hospital simulation centre
The tension in the operating room was palpable as the patient’s heart rate skyrocketed unexpectedly during surgery on her fractured ankle. Julie, the 19-year-old soccer player under local anaesthetic, worriedly asked what was wrong. The medical and nursing team reassured her as they quickly assessed and took action to stabilize her condition. Despite its location in the Royal Jubilee Hospital, this was not a typical operating room. Nor was Julie a typical patient; she’s actually a life-like mannequin. Both are part of the new $2.9-million Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Learning, a partnership between UVic’s School of Nursing, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and Island Health.
Core values fuel lifelong learning
Distance education program serves the needs of busy professionals—even those who live close to campus Asking Andy Stuart about his aspirations as a child, he recalls spending many hours playing with a specific group of Lego blocks while growing up in Gordon Head. “The police station was my favorite.”
Co-ops give HINF grad an edge
For Emily Mailes of Melbourne, Australia, deciding what to study was a daunting process. “I was not one of those people who always knew what they wanted to do.” Six years post-high school and having relocated to Victoria, Emily decided to pick a path and move forward with her life. “UVic’s School of Health Information Sciences stood out,” she says. A relative is a grad who now has an interesting and lucrative career. The global opportunities across the tech sector held considerable appeal along with the school’s promise of guaranteed placement upon graduation.
Family Centre marks 20 years
Occupying a modest, two-bedroom suite within the Family Housing complex on Lam Circle, the UVic Family Centre was intended as a family health unit. Twenty years later, it has evolved into something much more, says director Elizabeth Quong, “and that’s a good thing.”
A curriculum of care at Our Place
Two UVic collaborations serving vulnerable populations provide learning opportunities for students Many people across Greater Victoria volunteer to improve the lives of our community’s most vulnerable people. UVic collaborations in nursing and business go a step further, shaping learning experiences in the spirit of service.
Coming full circle
Chelsea Turpin knew early on that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and youth. Now she is employed doing just that. Turpin graduates in November with a BA from UVic’s School of Child and Youth Care, and she is already working as a policy analyst for BC’s Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
