Update on construction of new walking, cycling paths
The construction of new paved pedestrian and cycling pathways on Gabriola Road begins on Feb. 26 and is scheduled to continue to May 30, 2024.
The northbound lane between CARSA and Ring Road will be permanently closed to all traffic for the addition of a new bi-directional bike lane. The southbound lane will remain open throughout construction and beyond. The project also includes construction between CARSA and McKenzie Avenue at Vikes Way, extending to the Dawnview Crescent pathway.
There will be construction noise restrictions in place during the exam period and traffic control personnel will be on site to direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
This work is part of the university’s 2019 Campus Cycling Plan, which aims to create a bicycle-friendly campus designed for people of All Ages and Abilities (AAA). The plan guides the creation of campus cycling infrastructure, such as building more bike paths, places to park bikes, and spots where people can freshen up after riding or walking. These changes are meant to make it safer and more comfortable for people who walk and bike to, from and around our campus.
