Why UVic Law?
UVic Law is widely regarded as one of Canada's finest law schools. We have internationally recognized faculty members, a collegial atmosphere, a stimulating intellectual environment, and a strong commitment to social justice. Our faculty offers a pluralistic academic environment that encourages a variety of approaches to legal scholarship (from feminist, historical, comparative, analytical jurisprudence to critical legal theory).
What We Offer
A thesis-based LLM in Law and Society and PhD in Law and Society program that fosters advanced research at the intersection of law and society. As an interdisciplinary program, each student's supervisory committee has a scholar from outside the law faculty.
Our students take courses in legal theory and research methodology, as well as courses with leading scholars from history, philosophy, anthropology, political science, sociology, visual arts, indigenous governance, business, and other fields.
Areas of Research Strength
We accept students across a wide range of subject areas with an interdisciplinary law and society focus. Our program welcomes engagement with Canadian, international, and comparative dimensions of the study of law.
Our particular areas of strength are:
- Indigenous legal orders, governance, comparative Indigenous rights
- Aboriginal law and treaty rights
- Constitutional law
- Critical pedagogy
- Environmental law and policy; water law
- Legal history
- Legal theory, especially feminist, post-human and critical legal theory
- International private law (conflict of laws)
- Intellectual and cultural property law
Areas of Graduate Supervision
Research, teaching and administration obligations of individual faculty mean we cannot guarantee supervision in the above areas in any given year. We do our best to match each student with a law faculty supervisor that has depth in the student's chosen field.
