Val Napoleon, a distinguished leader in the revitalization of Indigenous law in Canada, has been honoured with the Yvan Allaire Medal by the Royal Society of Canada. This honour recognizes her exemplary contributions to the field of governance, particularly through her work in Indigenous legal orders.

The Black Law Student Professional Support (BLSPS) Program’s goal is to expand and enhance educational support and professional development resources for Black law students at UVic Faculty of Law. Objectives include enhancing learning, promoting wellness and improving Black student retention in the legal profession.

Each year, students from UVic Law compete in simulated legal proceedings that allow them to develop their advocacy skills and legal reasoning in a competitive setting. In 2024, UVic teams excelled in a variety of moots, showcasing their expertise in legal research, oral skills, and critical thinking on national and international stages.
The faculty is excited to announce that three new scholars have joined the School of Law in 2024. Andrew Luesley, whose appointment began January 1, and Funmilola Ayotunde and Estair Van Wagner, whose appointments both began July 1.

The Canadian Association for Legal Ethics / Association canadienne pour l’ethique juridique (CALE/ACEJ) annual conference will be hosted in-person at the University of Victoria on October 20th and 21st, 2023.
The UVic Faculty of Law presents: Indigenous Law: Today and Tomorrow with John Borrows and Val Napoleon 7:30 p.m. Farquhar Auditorium, University of Victoria. Join Chancellor Shelagh Rogers, Indigenous leaders, community members, and scholars to mark this historic moment as we celebrate the launch of the world’s first Indigenous law degree. Dr. Borrows will explore Salish Law and Land: Lessons Learned and Dr. Napoleon will look at the future of Indigenous Law: Fast Forward. This free public lecture has reserved seating.
Shiri Pasternak presents "What is colonialism that does not dispossess? Ecologies of Care and Supply at Barriere Lake." This presentation examines the materialities of colonialism from the perspective of a present-day Algonquin community in northern Quebec.
