UVic’s Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (LATHE) graduate certificate program is the first of its kind in Canada. It is a dynamic program that prepares UVic Doctoral students to teach effectively in higher education in order to successfully compete in the academic job market. Concurrent PhD students pay a reduced program fee.
LATHE is offered jointly by the Division of Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation and Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies within the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The LATHE program was instrumental in the development of my academic career. The practical elements of the curriculum, such as designing lessons, articulating a teaching philosophy, giving and receiving feedback, and even constructing an entire course, were immediately useful in my academic job search.
Intended learning outcomes of the program
- Critically assess theories, models, and practices of university teaching designed to enhance student learning while exposing and dispelling myths and fads that undermine student learning.
- Apply course design principles to develop a learning-centred approach to one’s teaching that meets the needs of all students, including individual cultural and learning differences.
- Contribute to discussions concerning important, topical issues in higher education in, and beyond, one’s own discipline.
- Provide and receive balanced critical feedback on teaching with respect to enhancing student learning.
- Continuously practice scholarly investigation on the impact of one’s own teaching on student learning, through critical reflection and by employing the methodologies of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) where relevant.
- Develop and revise an effective, evidence-based teaching dossier to accompany one’s ongoing career in university teaching.
