Professional Information & Research Interests

My research priorities are situated in Indigenous child and family issues including community centered practice and the resurgence of traditional family systems of care. In 2010 I edited a manuscript that highlights policy and practice issues in open customary adoption for First Nation children. I also hold a research grant from the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) to conduct an analysis of the cultural planning process for Aboriginal children being adopted into non Aboriginal families. I am a Co-Investigator for two research projects that are funded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). One project is dedicated to exploring issues of Indigenous identity in Western academic environments. The second is a project that is exploring the impact of media on women transitioning from street sex work and the impact of family relationships.

My teaching goals are to teach and mentor Masters level students, and collaborate with them to advance Indigenous knowledge building and transfer. I also enjoy teaching undergraduate students with the hope of inspiring them to strive toward graduate studies.
