Xa7limut (Ha-lay-mut) Jack Campo Indigenous Law Award

The Award was established in 2022 by UVic Law alumni Gary Campo and his wife Kelly Campo. The name of the award was chosen in honour of Xa7limut, Gary’s father, who has spent a lifetime teaching generosity and advocacy for Indigenous rights and education; and in honour of Gary’s Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) great grandmother Kamonak, who was given the responsibility of carrying several ancestral names after the smallpox epidemic in the mid-19th century, including the female version of the name Xa7limut, until the names could be passed on to future generations.

Gary graduated in 2000 and has devoted his entire legal career to furthering Indigenous rights.
