Aaron Learmont Memorial Scholarship

Aaron Learmont was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague. This award will provide financial support to an upper-year University of Victoria political science student with academic excellence and financial need.

Aaron earned his BA with a major in political science at the University of Victoria in 2005. He cherished his time there and the friends he made. As an alumnus, he became a monthly donor. By 2008, he earned his advanced diploma in GIS applications from North Island University. He applied his education working for Tetrad Computer Applications, where he would remain a trusted colleague and friend for more than 11 years.

Aaron had an unwavering steadiness and an ability to focus on solutions. He remained his intelligent, calm, logical self even when faced with the mortal challenge of astrocytoma and glioblastoma. He analyzed information objectively and made the decisions that were supported by the best evidence. Aaron passed away on January 31, 2020 at the age of 37 with his wife Patricia Gooch by his side.

Years before his diagnosis, Aaron expressed an interest to mentor young people. In his final working months, he enjoyed mentoring new staff and graduate students. Although Aaron’s life ended early, this award will help fulfill his goal to mentor a new generation of high-achieving professionals. Aaron wanted us to try our best in everything we do, and to keep going forward even though he cannot be here with us anymore.
