Leo Chan Memorial Scholarship in Political Science
Leo Chan was an undergraduate student in political science who tragically passed away in 2012 from Meningococcal – Y Disease. Leo loved political science, his parents and friends as well as his professors and his music. Leo was an extraordinarily gifted and inspiring young man who had aspirations to become a human rights lawyer. One of his professors said this of him: “Leo was a hard-working and intellectually gifted young man. His kind energy and enthusiasm, winning smile and relentless curiosity amazed all who crossed his charming path. He loved to read, to debate, to make friends, to ask questions and to help others. He was passionate in his convictions yet never inflexible or dogmatic. He was a student who inspired his teachers.” Leo’s parents, Mabel and C.K. Chan as well as their family and friends were shocked and saddened by Leo’s sudden death as he passed away even though there was a vaccine that would have prevented his illness. They have established this scholarship in the hope of raising awareness about Meningococcal disease, the availability of the vaccine and the high risk that university students are in. They also hope that this scholarship will ensure that future students will continue to be inspired by Leo: his relentless optimism and dream of making the world a better place.
