Having graduated from UVic’s Department of Theatre in 1997 with a specialization in acting, Shannan Calcutt went on to graduate from the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre. She studied the art form of Clown with master teachers Sue Morrison and Philippe Gaulier and achieved a MFA in Writing for Dramatic Media in 2015 (UNLV).

Shannan has performed everywhere from Saskatoon’s Wash ‘n Slosh Pub to the Sydney Opera House. Her work has been profiled in art magazines American Theatre and Border Crossings and broadcast on CBC Radio and Canada’s Bravo! Network. CBC has declared her “a national treasure.”

For the past eleven years, Calcutt has called the stage of Zumanity home. She has performed for over 4 million spectators and is the only female comedian to co-write and perform a solo act in Cirque du Soleil’s 30 year history. Calcutt is also one of Zumanity’s Comedic Directors, and in addition to co-writing 4 comedy acts, she recently co-wrote the emcee script for the show. 

Other recent writing and directing credits include The Penny Pibbets Show, which enjoyed critical acclaim and a sold out run at Vegas’ Art Square Theatre, and the premiere One Night for One Drop, a one-night only performance for Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte’s ONE DROP Foundation. Calcutt was also the shows Lead Comedian and Acting Coach. Featured in USA Today ’10 Best Annual Events in Las Vegas’, ONOD has raised 17.6 million to date to support One Drop’s mission.

A celebrated Instructor and Coach, Calcutt was recently Guest Faculty at the Banff Center and is the Clown Coach for Cirque du Soleil’s 7 Resident Shows in Las Vegas and Orlando. She has collaborated with artists in internationally acclaimed companies Circus Oz, Cirque Eloize, Legs on the Wall, Circus Monoxide, Circus WOW, The Second City and Spiegelworld.

She lives in Las Vegas with her husband Darren, daughter Ella Rose and son Julian.
