Alistair Newton graduated from the University of Victoria’s Department of Theatre in 2005 with the directing specialization. It was during this same year that he founded Ecce Homo theatre, a company with a mandate to produce stylized theatrical works with strong socio-political content that synthesizes text, music, dance, and design to yield a total theatrical experience.

Since moving to Ontario, Newton has worked with Peter Hinton at the National Arts Center for the innaugural presentation of The Ark.Both a playwright and a director, Newton has created works such as The Ecstasy of Mother Theresa or Agnus Bojaxhui Superstar (2009), The Pastor Phelps Project: a fundamentalist cabaret (2008), and Leni Riefenstahl vs. The 20th Century (2009). He worked as director and dramaturge on the World Premiere of Bella: The Colour of Love that Professor Mary Kerr created with Theresa Tova for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts at the Philadelphia Theatre Company.

Recent activity includes working with Buddies in Bad Times theatre on Of a Monstrous Child: A Gaga Musical in 2013, which was nominated for four Dora Awards. Newton was also just recently chosen for the Neil Munro Intern Directors Project for 2014 at the Shaw Festival where he will be assisting Peter Hinton on Cabaret.
