BFA

Dennis Garnhum has been the Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary since 2005. He came to UVic for his BFA in Directing and graduated in 1990. He also holds a MFA in Directing from the University of British Columbia and spent three summers in the Opera Program at the Banff School of Fine Arts working as Assistant Director to acclaimed opera director Colin Graham.

He returned to UVic as a guest artist for Brecht’s Happy End in 1994, a production that also included some now-prominent theatre artists like T.J. Dawe and Charles Ross. 

Prior to his appointment at Theatre Calgary, Dennis spent three years living in New York City. He was the Special Projects Producer at the Long Wharf Theatre where he worked on the development of the opera Brundibar. In the past two years, Dennis has also directed the operas for Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera. At Theatre Calgary he has directed several world premieres and all new productions including Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Janet Munsil. He has directed at almost all the major theatre companies in Canada, including the Stratford Festival of Canada, Shaw Festival, Alberta Theatre Projects, Tarragon Theatre, Manitoba Theatre Centre and of course the Belfry Theatre.
