Ian McDougall

Brief Biography

Ian McDougall taught trombone and Jazz Studies at the School of Music from 1990-2003 while also directing the UVic Big Band. He served as Director of the School of Music from 1998-1999.

Ian McDougall was born in Calgary, Canada, on June 14, 1938, and grew up in Victoria. He left in 1960 to tour in Great Britain with the John Dankworth Band, and returned to Canada in 1962 to begin a lengthy career as a freelance player, composer and arranger in Vancouver and in Toronto. Until 1991, he was the lead and solo trombonist with Rob McConnell's Boss Brass and 'The Brass Connection". Since the early 1980's McDougall has become more involved in composition, and his work has been performed by the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, the Lafayette String Quartet, and the Toronto Symphony, among others. In 1995 he recorded "The Warmth of the Horn" for Concord jazz Records (CCD-4652) which features Ian with his Quartet. He now resides in Victoria, where he teaches trombone and jazz studies at the University of Victoria. The past few years have included tours as a performer and clinician to many cities in Canada and the United States, and to Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Hawai'i, Denmark, and England, where Ian was music director for BBC Big Band radio broadcasts on two occasions (1996 and 1998). Two recent CDs are: "Songs and Arias" (CDMO1-2)- a 2 CD set which features one disc of popular Broadway songs played in the Jazz idiom with pianist Ron Johnston, and a second disc of classic operatic arias where Ian is joined by pianist Robert Holliston; and "Dry with a Twist" (CDMO2)- featuring the Ian McDougall Sextet.
