Optoelectronic Tweezers; from micromanipulation to macroscopic applications

ABSTRACT

Abstract:

Light patterned electrical fields can be used to manipulate microscopic particles suspended in a liquid in a device that has become known as Optoelectronic Tweezers (OET). In this talk I will highlight some of the recent examples of using OET to place forces on microscopic particles for applications form nanotechnology to cell biology including examples of assembling metallic/semiconducting nanowires into desired patterns and examining the deformability of red blood cells. We will then go on to look at how OET may be extended to manipulate larger particles in the size range of tens of micrometers to hundreds of micrometers and I will show how this micromanipulation technology could become a macroscopic manufacturing technique.
