ABSTRACT

Abstract:

The talk will present approaches for hands-free capturing and separation of sound sources using microphone arrays. Potential applications include communication (Skype) and speech-enabled human-machine interfaces (Ford SYNC, Kinect+Xbox).This talk will cover microphone types, beamforming and sound source localization, sound source separation techniques, and binaural sound capture and processing. Live demos and videos will be presented.

Biography:

Ivan J. Tashev received his Engineering Diploma in Electronics and his PhD in Computer Science from the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1984 and 1990, respectively. He was an Assistant Professor in the same university and joined Microsoft in 1998. Currently he is a Principal Architect in Microsoft Research, leading the MSR Audio team. Dr. Tashev has contributed algorithms and designs to microphone array support in Windows, RoundTable device, the audio pipeline in Microsoft Auto platform, and the audio pipeline in Kinect. He is the inventor or co-inventor of 50 US patent submissions, of which 31 have been granted. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of its Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing Technical Committee and Industrial Digital Signal Processing Standing Committee. He is also member of the Audio Engineering Society and its Pacific Northwest Committee, and the Acoustical Society of America.
