ABSTRACT

Abstract

The problem of proper S-matrix definition in the case of transmission lines with losses and modes below cut-off is revisited. It is shown that in those cases, due to non-real reference impedance, the classical S-matrix definition based on power waves becomes controversial: the power waves do not obey the Maxwell equations and the calculated reflection coefficient is different from the physical one. To resolve those difficulties, alternative definitions of modal voltages and currents, and modal incident and reflected waves, are proposed. The method of S-parameter extraction built thereupon is applied to wide-band analyses in a multi-mode environment including evanescent modes. Somewhat unusual properties of the generalized S-matrices for evanescent modes are also discussed.
