ABSTRACT

Current re-engineering environments are comprised of two main methods: the utilization of specific components to examine database schema environments in which the structure is already known and documented, and building a parser from scratch for the specified schema. The first approach faces the limitation that the tools involved are domain specific, while the second requires extensive knowledge of the domain. File based legacy database systems are often proprietary and the schema unavailable, precluding the practical implementation of either approach.

The goal of the Buffy project is to develop a tool to that will allow the extraction of the structure of a file or database where the schema is unavailable. This tool can be expanded beyond the target of database applications, and can be generalized for use on any kind of file that has an implicit structure (i.e. little languages).
