Research Assistant Job: Ethnographic Mapping Lab

Working with Dr. Thom, the Undergrad RA for this project will create an appealing and well organized visual interface for that incorporates the new icons with the current set.

This is a short-term RA opportunity for an undergraduate looking to develop their web design skills as we launch a major new set of indigenous mapping icons on UVic’s Ethnographic Mapping Lab’s website.  We have 100 brand new icons (inspired by indigenous mapping in the Amazon) in six separate colour schemes to add to our current collection of ~70 icons x 6 colours for the north Pacific Coast.  These icons are built in the design consistent for use in Google Earth/Google Maps, and are hosted on UVic’s research computing cluster.

The interface will allow users to either download or hyperlink directly from our site, will build in analytics to track their use, and provide zip files download options for offline usage.  If time allows (and creatively using available resources), we will also try to create translations of the icon category names and descriptions into French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian for users of the site.

I am accepting applications via email (bthom@uvic.ca) now, and will keep the posting open until a suitable candidate is found.  Please send a brief cover letter describing your interest in the project, the focus of your current studies, and be sure to highlight any prior skills you may have with HTML, web layout, or graphic design.

The project will start immediately, and is anticipated to take 15-20 hours of work.  The pay is the standard UVic undergrad RA rate of $14.60 / hr.
