Was 'earliest musical instrument' just a chewed-up bone?

According to a new study, bone artifacts (called "Neanderthal flutes") once thought to be the earliest musical instruments were actually the work of scavenging hyenas. The discovery means there is now no evidence that Neanderthals made musical instruments. The National Geographic also turned to April Nowell for comment on the finding.
