Joyce Underwood (February 16, 1948 - May 18, 2015)
The Department of Anthropology wishes to respectfully acknowledge the passing of SLA,SHIM,IYE Joyce Underwood (February 16, 1948 - May 18, 2015). Joyce was an Elder in Residence at First Peoples House and was a respected and dear teacher in our department. Students and faculty and staff are grateful for her teachings on Coast Salish culture, and her sharing of her experiences around the legacy of residential schools. A Survivor herself, Joyce played an important role in the repatriation of paintings to Survivors from the Alberni Indian Residential School in 2013. Her voice will be dearly missed.
