Small modular reactors (SMRs) appear to have the potential to transform the
application of nuclear energy worldwide. Moreover, Canada appears to have a greater opportunity
to demonstrate and deploy SMRs than other leading industrialized countries, due to an established
nuclear science and industry base, many potential deployment locations, and a trusted yet
adaptable regulatory framework. Energy systems, like other complex human systems, are not just
about the technology or the machines; they are about interactions among many stakeholders and
interconnected networks. John will describe the SMR Roadmap Project’s ongoing endeavour
to hold a pan-Canadian discussion of the potential, opportunity, and
challenges of SMRs for Canada
