SEARCH FOR THE DIRECTOR - CENTRE FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS AND RELATED TECHNOLOGY (CAMTEC)

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Director of the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology (CAMTEC). The appointment will begin on 1 January 2015 for a term of five years. Candidates for CAMTEC Director must hold a tenured appointment in an academic department at the University of Victoria.

Applicants should possess and demonstrate the following attributes:
• significant knowledge of the advanced materials community (provincial, national and international), with a well developed network of colleagues and resources;
• superior leadership, administrative and management abilities;
• a recognized scholarly reputation in their advanced materials field;
• a breadth of vision and the capacity to build consensus; and
• the ability to raise research funds from external agencies, industry and other sources.

CAMTEC is a University of Victoria research centre committed to interdisciplinary work on advanced materials and technology. The scope of this work covers a wide spectrum of research in theoretical and applied areas. With this in mind CAMTEC coordinates related research among the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. CAMTEC members work in close association with scientists and engineers from the private and public sectors to ensure technology transfer to industry.
CAMTEC’s objectives are to carry out fundamental and applied research in advanced materials, to train technical and academic personnel in these areas, and to disseminate the knowledge gained from the research through scientific publications, conferences, workshops and seminars. As part of the University of Victoria, CAMTEC involves graduate students in the latest developments and applications of materials research. In each of the participating departments, members are continually developing new graduate courses in advanced materials. The centre stimulates the development and purchase of new equipment and facilities that will also attract graduate students and visiting researchers.

Reporting to the Vice-President Research, the Director will administer the Centre which will involve overseeing the day to day operations, including financial management, planning and initiating new activities, and communications and human resources in collaboration with the staff of the Centre. The Director contributes directly to the management of infrastructure such as the Scanning Transmission Electron Holography Microscope (STEHM) Facility. The Director also chairs the STEHM User Committee.
