Who:  Dr. Alexandre Brolo, Candidate for appointment for Director of the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology

About:

Dr. Alex Brolo obtained his Master's degree in Brazil at the University of Sao Paulo. He moved to Canada in 1993 and obtained his PhD at the University of Waterloo with Dr. Donald E. Irish. In Waterloo, Dr. Brolo applied the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique to the in situ studies of electrochemical processes. Between 1998 and 2000, Dr. Brolo was a post-doctoral fellow working on a joint project with Dr. Peter Norton (University of Western Ontario) and Dr. John Hepburn (University of British Columbia). In this project, he studied the decomposition of water from Zr surfaces using ultra-high vaccum,  surface science techniques and laser ionization spectroscopy (resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization- REMPI).

Dr. Brolo started as an assistant professor at UVic in 2001, was promoted to associate professor in 2006 and to full professoor in 2011. His current research is geared towards the development of metallic nanostructures for applications in plasmonics and SERS. He is also interested in the  study of electrochemical interfaces by laser spectroscopic methods.
