2018 BC Chinese Bridge Mandarin Singing Contest

The Vancouver Island Chinese Singing Contest, organised by the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, is to be held in HHB 105 on Friday October 26th, 2018. Selected contestants will participate in the finals of the BC University Students Singing Contest in Vancouver on Nov. 17th. Students who are interested are encouraged to submit their online applications, before Oct. 22nd. All are welcome to attend.




2018 BC “Chinese Bridge” Mandarin Singing Contest

1. Time and Location for the Preliminary Contest:
1) Lower Mainland: Confucius Institute at BCIT (280-555 Seymour St., Vancouver, 1:00 p.m., Oct 27, 2018)
2) Fraser Valley: University of Fraser Valley or Trinity Western University (TBA)
3) Vancouver Island: University of Victoria (Henry Hickman Building 105, 4:30 p.m., Oct 26, 2018)
Please note that all contestants have to be present for the preliminary contest. Any group with fewer than 4 vocalists will be disqualified for the group competition.

2. Time and Location for Final Contest
Time: November 17, 2018
Location: TBA

3. Registration
- Online registration at http://www.confuciusbcit.com
- Registration opens on September 27, 2018
- Registration deadline: 23:59 of October 22, 2018.
- Registration fee: $5.00 for Category A (1 -3 vocalists); $10.00 for Category B (4-12 vocalists).

Categories
1) Category A (1-3 vocalists) is entitled to compete for the First, Second and Third Prize in addition to five other awards including Best Stage Appearance Award, Highest Popularity Award, Best Pronunciation Award, Best Chinese Style Award and Best Costumes and Best Creativity Award respectively.

2) Category B (4-12 vocalists) is entitled to compete for the Group Singing First-Place, Second-Place and Third-Place Prize, under the condition that there should be at least three groups qualified for the final contest.

5. Evaluation Criteria
· Accuracy in Mandarin Pronunciation and Articulation: 35%.

· Breath Control and Quality of Voice: 30%

· Precision in Pitch and Rhythm: 15%.

· Level of Difficulty and Artistic Merit: 10%.

· Stage Manners and Artistic Creativity: 10%.


6. Prizes:
For each category:
· One First Prize: CAN$300
· Two Second Prizes: CAN$200 each
· Three Third Prizes: CAN$100 each

Other awards are

· Best Stage Appearance - CAN$50
· Highest Popularity Award - CAN$50
· Best Pronunciation Award - CAN$50
· Best Chinese Style Award - CAN$50
· Best Creativity Award - CAN$50
