Ten faculty, instructors and staff members celebrated 270 combined years of service in October.

Professor Cody Poulton from Pacific and Asian Studies, lecturers Harbinder Sanghara and Monika Smith from English, and Department of History professor David Zimmerman each reached 30 years of service.

Associate professor Luke Carson and lecturer Sheila Burgar from English, associate professor Annalee Lepp from Gender Studies, associate professor Elizabeth Vibert and administrative assistant Heather Waterlander from history, and Amelia Santos, manager of finance and administration in the Dean’s Office, were each honoured for 25 years of service.

Burgar was among those who attended the 2018 Long Service Recognition Reception on Oct. 18. She has taught first-year and upper-level English literature and composition courses since 1993 at UVic, after teaching high school.

“I love teaching. I love being in the classroom,” Burgar says. “Even though I have taught many novels and courses many times over, the students always make it new.”

Known for her enthusiasm in the classroom and love of Victorian fiction, poetry and non-fiction prose, Burgar says she wouldn’t choose any other career.

“I don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I did something else instead.’ This is my perfect job.”
