Pro-D Event for High School Teachers
The UVic History Department will be hosting a Professional Development day for Social Studies teachers on Friday February 20th titled “Special Topics in History: An Enrichment Opportunity for Social Studies Teachers”
This year the Department of History has partnered with the Division of Continuing Studies.
New this year! Based on the feedback we received after last year’s event we have made the sessions longer to allow for more discussion.
Schedule:
9:15 - 9:45 - Sign in/orientation with refreshments
10:00 - 11:15 - Session 1
Choose one of these three topics:
- History is not Propaganda, but Propaganda is History with Dr. Mariel Grant
- Louis Riel and the Legitimacy of Métis Self-Determination with Dr. Christine O’Bonsawin
11:30 - 12:30 – Plenary
Landscapes of Injustice: The Displacement and Dispossession of Japanese Canadians during World War II with Dr. Jordan Stanger-Ross
12:30 - 1:30 – Lunch – There are many food outlets available on campus, or bring your own.
1:45 - 3:00 - Session 2

- Conflict in Syria and Iraq: The Complex Historical Roots of Multi-Sided Proxy Wars with Dr. Andrew Wender
- Five Myths about Canada's Colonial Era: Teaching the History of Indigenous-Settler Relations with Dr. Peter Cook
