March 2nd, 3:30 pm - "A Social History of Income Tax"

What better way to explore the relationship between citizens and the state than through tax? Complying with or resisting the taxman is always about money, but it is also always about larger questions, too. Shirley Tillotson, author of Give and Take: the Citizen-Taxpayer and the Rise of Canadian Democracy, explores working class and indigenous tax protests and Treasury tax projects in British Columbia in the early years of the federal income tax and shows their impact on democratic culture.
