TWO RESEARCH ASSISTANT (RA) POSITIONS IN GENDER STUDIES AT UVIC

TWO RESEARCH ASSISTANT (RA) POSITIONS IN GENDER STUDIES AT UVIC

CUPE 4163 Academic Assistants

The Department of Gender Studies is seeking two Research Assistants in the Fall 2024 term with the possibility of some follow-up hours in the Spring 2025 term. These positions will support Gender Studies faculty in redesigning our introductory course GNDR 100: Gender, Power, and Difference. The rate of pay is $31.49/ hour + vacation (4%) and benefits (2%). Each RA position is 110 hours. These positions are open to graduate students and recent graduates in related fields with a minimum of an MA degree.

The RAs will be responsible for: 1. Collecting other introductory syllabi in Gender Studies to give us a sense of what core texts (distinct from textbooks) are being taught at the first-year level at other Canadian universities 2. Finding new readings and other course materials (films, podcasts etc) to replace any outdated texts (understanding that newer is not always better) 3. Making recommendations for universal design in content, evaluation and delivery.

Materials will be assembled to support all instructors for updating lectures, using trauma-informed and anti-oppressive teaching practices, as well as fostering community and relationality in the classroom. In the spirit of decolonial praxis, the RAs should also be familiar with the UVic Indigenous Plan

GNDR 100 is a critical course where we introduce foundational concepts of gender, sexism, transphobia; race, racism, white supremacy, and privilege; class, classism, and global wealth disparities; gendered, and racialized divisions of labour locally and transnationally; sexuality, homophobia, and heteronormativity. We ground these concepts in understandings of systems of power such as heteropatriarchy, colonization, capitalism, neo-liberalism, and globalization. Where possible, we highlight resistance, as seen in feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, trans+, queer, and transnational social movements. This learning is useful to students in all their fields of study and as members of the UVic community.

Please send applications to Jaime Ready at gndrapp@uvic.ca by August 26th. Applications must include your CV, Academic Transcript, and a Cover Letter detailing relevant course work, RA experience, area of research specialization, vision for course design, and three letters of reference.

We aim to hire one RA with expertise in Gender Studies in the Humanities and one with expertise in Gender Studies in the Social Sciences.
