Andrew's Story from Kenya

Over the course of my first month here in Nairobi, Kenya, I have been extremely grateful for the connections I have been able to make both inside and outside of work. More recently, I have started to get involved in the project team supporting the initial stages of the MEDITECH Expanse electronic health record (EHR) project at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi. This past month, my colleagues and I have been meeting with the departments in the hospital to analyze the current state workflows of the hospital management information system that is currently in use. Further supporting the early stages of this large-scale project, I have also developed a stakeholder management toolkit survey which will be utilized in the coming weeks to obtain quantitative data that will assess the readiness of involved stakeholders on the anticipated changes with the EHR implementation. Within the context of my first month in Kenya, I have already found it highly interesting to learn about some of the baseline differences between health information technology solutions in the East African healthcare context when in comparison to Canada. I am extremely thankful for the School of Health Information Science at the University of Victoria for providing me with a once in a lifetime opportunity that I know will be very beneficial towards both the personal and professional growth in my career.
