On November 29, 2022, it rained (and snowed) sprinkles across campus and online for Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back. As symbolized by the sprinkles, each small act of generosity adds up. The result? A fun-filled day and a huge contribution to the UVic experience.

For the second year in a row, there were 24 priority funds for donors to choose from. Each priority fund fits into one of the following themes: climate action, equity, diversity and inclusion, hands-on learning, student need, or student-led clubs and activities.

Thanks to everyone who donated, bought a coffee, sponsored a challenge, sent a Giving Gram or faced the cold to volunteer, this year’s event raised $152,261! That brings the total raised since 2016 to $728,531.

One popular fund this year was the UVSS foodbank, which surpassed its fundraising goal of $7,000 and raised $8,902!

Giving Tuesday provides an opportunity for anyone who wants to give back to do so – even if they couldn’t be on campus for the fun and excitement. Alumni, students, UVic employees, community members and donors took part in online games to unlock challenges and designate money provided by sponsors.

47% of Giving Tuesday 2022 supporters were alumni!

On campus, the Ron Neal Real Estate Group sponsored a life-sized Philanthropoly game, where students played to learn about the impact of donations at UVic. Most were shocked to find out that UVic donors gave $33.5 million last year! After participating, students were given “sprinkle bucks” (representing real donor dollars) to donate to a priority fund of their choice. For some it was their first experience of philanthropy at UVic.

Philanthropoly and other interactive educational games were played by over 2,148 students.

Support from the UVic community broke records this year! 1,173 Giving Grams were sent on Giving Tuesday and Thank You Thursday. These digital tokens of appreciation sent by colleagues and friends gift the recipient with donated money for a priority fund. Congratulations to UVIc Human Resources department for winning the Giving Gram-alanche challenge by sending the most Giving Grams.
