Increased capacity for HerWay Home

October 21, 2015

HerWay Home is gaining a part-time outreach worker thanks to a donation of $80,000 from Green Shield Canada. Herway Home improves the short and long term outcomes for mothers and babies in Victoria. By expanding the team, HerWay Home will have more capacity to reach out to and support pregnant women in the community, including women who find it harder to access existing services.

The University of Victoria is supporting ongoing research and evaluation of the HerWay Home program, which is a partnership between the Faculty of Human and Social Development’s School of Nursing, Island Health and the Children’s Health Foundation. It supports women who are challenged by complex life circumstances such as substance use, mental health issues, violence, trauma and poverty, whose needs are often so complex it’s difficult for existing resources to adequately support them. HerWay Home offers a safe place, free from judgement or stigma, where these women can access the support they need for their health and the health of their families.
